MAJOR ADDITIONS & RENOVATIONS
Matewan & Riverside PK-8
Renovations and Additions
MIRC Construction Services served as general contractor for a coordinated program of major additions and renovations at Matewan PK-8 and Riverside PK-8 for Mingo County Schools.
Together, the two projects included 22,790 square feet of new additions and 19,894 square feet of renovations — a combined construction program of approximately 42,684 square feet.
Matewan PK-8
10,221-square-foot masonry addition
Approximately 9,405 square feet of renovations
Riverside PK-8
12,569-square-foot one- and two-story masonry addition
Approximately 10,489 square feet of renovations
Both projects included new floor systems for science areas along with architectural, structural and building-system improvements. New gymnasium facilities were constructed at each school, complete with wood athletic flooring, scoreboards, gym equipment and 530-seat electrically operated telescoping bleachers.
Additional work encompassed classrooms, casework, lockers, ceilings, finishes, fire protection, mechanical and electrical systems, and associated site improvements.
PHASED K-12 CONSTRUCTION
Building Around the
School Calendar
Construction was deliberately phased around ongoing school operations. The new additions were built first while the existing campuses continued to serve students and staff.
Renovation work inside the existing buildings, along with associated bus-loop work, was scheduled as a second phase and could not begin until after the final day for teachers on June 8, 2012.
This sequencing required careful coordination of access, temporary protection, site circulation and daily school activities so that substantial new construction and renovation could move forward without unnecessary disruption to campus operations.
Project Scope
New additions constructed alongside operating schools
Renovation work phased around the academic calendar
Controlled access and construction-zone separation
Coordination of site circulation and school operations
Architectural, structural and building-system renovations
Gymnasium and athletic facility construction
Science classroom improvements
Site, utility and paving improvements
SCHOOL CONSOLIDATION & EXPANSION
Burch PK-8 Renovations and Addition
MIRC Construction Services served as general contractor for the renovations and addition at Burch PK-8 in Delbarton, West Virginia, another major facility project delivered for Mingo County Schools.
The project transformed the former Burch Middle School facility to accommodate a PK-8 grade configuration. The improvements added space for elementary-grade students and renovated the existing school so multiple student populations could be consolidated onto a single campus.
The work represented a significant investment in the school facility and expanded the building’s capacity to serve a broader range of grade levels within the existing campus.
Project Highlights
Addition and renovation of an existing public school
Reconfiguration from middle school to PK-8 use
New space to accommodate elementary-grade students
Renovation of existing educational areas
Consolidation of multiple student populations onto one campus
Continued expansion of MIRC’s K-12 construction experience for Mingo County Schools
