Preparing an Existing Treatment Suite for New TrueBeam Technology
MIRC Construction Services completed renovations to the existing linear accelerator suite at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, West Virginia. The project transformed the radiation-oncology treatment environment to accommodate a new Varian TrueBeam system.
The work combined selective demolition, architectural renovations and extensive coordination of structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire-protection and medical-equipment requirements. Each component had to align precisely with the TrueBeam installation while integrating into the existing hospital facility.

Construction Shaped Around the Equipment
Advanced medical equipment creates requirements that extend well beyond the treatment room itself. MIRC coordinated the renovated space around the dimensions, clearances, structural conditions, shielding and building-system requirements of the new Varian TrueBeam system.
The construction scope included selective demolition; removal of the existing concrete floor for a new equipment baseframe; underslab electrical pathways; lead-shielded construction; medical-gas relocation; and coordinated mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire-protection improvements. Power, controls, cooling and equipment connections were integrated in accordance with the project drawings and Varian’s installation requirements.

Technical Performance in a Patient-Centered Environment
The completed suite integrates highly specialized radiation-treatment technology into a clean, carefully coordinated clinical environment. Architectural finishes, radiation shielding, building systems and equipment infrastructure come together around the operational requirements of the Varian TrueBeam system.
Illuminated ceiling panels, warm wood finishes and a controlled color palette help soften the technical character of the treatment room while preserving the clearances, visibility and functionality required for radiation-oncology care.

Coordinating Specialized Work Around Ongoing Patient Care
The TrueBeam renovation was completed within St. Mary’s active Radiation Oncology department. Construction activities had to be carefully separated from occupied areas while maintaining safe access and minimizing disruption to patients, clinical staff and surrounding hospital operations.
MIRC coordinated temporary partitions, dust control, selective demolition, utility modifications and above-ceiling work within the existing facility. Planned shutdowns and equipment connections were coordinated with hospital representatives, the design team, engineering disciplines and Varian to move the project from demolition through installation and final completion.
